From Pastor Sheldon...
Like everything else these days, Lent will likely look a bit different this year. Ash Wednesday is typically the time when we gather for the imposition of ashes and remind ourselves of our mortality with the refrain, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
In the midst of a global pandemic, I think we are all more aware of the power of that remembrance than ever. Perhaps the most important part of our Ash Wednesday observance is remembering that when God chose to create, God reached down into the dirt to bring forth life. Adam’s creation—from the dust of the ground—is a powerful reminder for us that God is always doing a new thing, no matter how messy things seem to be.
Our Lenten theme this year will be “From the Dirt.” This will be an opportunity for us to consider what God is growing from the dirt and where new life might be bursting forth. Just as when created Adam, our call is to get our hands dirty and be a part of what God is doing to bring life out of our dirt.
As part of our Lenten practice, we often give something up or take on a new spiritual discipline to draw us closer to God in this season of repentance. What will you do this Lent? What is the dirt in your life that God can use as fertile soil to bring about new life? May this season of Lent be for us a season of repentance and renewal as we await the good news of Easter morning.
Peace,
Pastor Sheldon
